Professor John Ikimalo – The First Chair Occupant

Professor John Ikimalo had his medical degree from the University of Benin and completed his residency programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. He was employed by the University of Port Harcourt as lecturer 1 and rose through the ranks to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University.

He worked closely with late Professor Emeritus Nimi Briggs for over 20years and became the first Chair occupant of Nimi Briggs Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He held several positions at the university including former Head of department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Services, member of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt and member of the Board of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

His research interests include reproductive tract infectioninfertility and assisted reproductive technology. He established the Assisted Conception Unit at the University Teaching Hospital.

He retired from the University of Port Harcourt in 2024 and he is a visiting Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the PAMO University of Health Sciences, Port Harcourt.
